Essential Winter Car Maintenance Tips

Safety is an important consideration all year round; however winter can be particularly tough on your car. It is important to ensure you are prepared with a few simple maintenance checks so you do not end up stranded on the highway.

Check your anti-freeze
Purchase a tester kit for as little as $5 and make sure the level is full and made up of 50% distilled water and 50% anti-freeze.

Check your tires
Winter is not the time to be cheap with your tires. Make sure the tread depth is at least 2/32" (if not more) and they are correctly inflated to the recommended PSI. This will help you maintain traction in slippery conditions.

Check your wipers
One of the main causes of accidents in winter is poor visibility. Between falling snow and the salt and sand used to grit icy roads your windshield will quickly get dirty in winter. Wipers need to be in top condition to keep your windshield clean and safe. You may also consider a windshield fluid with de-ice treatment.

General maintenance
It won’t hurt to ensure that your battery is fully charged and your engine oil level is sufficient. Your car will be working much harder during the winter to beat the frost so make sure these basics are covered.

Prepare an emergency kit
You may still find yourself caught in a blizzard; prepare an emergency kit that includes extra food and water, a flashlight, flares and a first aid kit. Also make sure your cell phone is fully charged if you must travel in bad weather.

Following these simple tips will minimize your chances of getting stranded in bad weather.
