Tips and advice for buying a used car

When you buy a used object, no matter what it is, you are taking a great risk. If you want to buy a car, you have to be even more careful. It’s not only about the money that you’ll spend, but also about your own safety; you don’t want to get stuck on the middle of the highway because the car breaks down. These are some tips that will help you buy a good used car:

  • Do some research. The worst thing that you can do is to just go online and search for random cars that fit in your budget. You have to focus on a specific model and know exactly what you want: the price and the price difference with extras, the year, the model, the mileage, the mpg and the reliability of the model.
  • If you choose to buy from a dealership, there are still precautions you need to take. Many people seem to believe that if they buy a “certified” car from a dealership, they have nothing to worry about. The truth is that a car dealer will do everything he can to sell you that car, including making it seem better than it actually is. Know the market and the car you have in mind before you go to a dealer.
  • Don’t fall for the looks. There are many gorgeous cars out there, and you may be very tempted to buy one right then and there. As happy as you might be with the color of the car, the engine is the most important part. Look under the hood to see if looks like it has been cared for. Look at the tires to see if there is wear. Are maintenance schedules and repair reports available and if not, why not? Does the car start easily and sound smooth? Is there blue smoke from the exhaust when you rev the engine?
  • Take it to a reliable mechanic, preferably someone you know. The seller can offer you a free inspection by his mechanic, but this can easily be a trap.
